Bonnie Boton

A Native of the Midwest, Bonnie Bailey Boton developed an
interest in photogray in 1975 upon seeing the Ansel Adams Gallery in Carmel,
California and meeting the acclaimed artist. "The heightened realism
of nature portrayed in black and white, the sharp focus, heightened contrast
and precise exposure became my source of inspiration and aspiration.
It represented my ah-ha moment in terms of what it was possible to reveal
with a camera." Bonnie then studied photography at Columbia College in
Chicago and discovered another connection with Adams -- advocacy through
beauty. An environmentalist and nature-lover, she realized that while
beauty takes precedence, her photographs could lead people into taking a
deeper look at the wonder of a leaf or the piston of a flower, find a form
of grace in an empty table, invent their own narratives, their own meanings
and their own gratitude for the world around them.
As a commercial photographer, Bonnie has captured many
artists in their own right, including movie, theater and sports celebrities
as well as Second City comedians, taking special care to find and reveal
something surprising. When the opportunity came along to join the
video crew of Terry Spencer Hesser Productions and shoot stills of Mackinac
Island, she jumped at the chance to return to and document the island that
dominates her childhood memories. Since then , she has been traveling
to Mackinac Island to capture the elusive colors and forms of nature both in
color and black and white.
