Original Artwork
Mary Guntzviller

Mary, a graduate of Wayne
State U, has a degree in Fine Art with an emphasis in figure drawing and
sculpture. Since moving north to her husband, John, in 1982, her artwork has
been inspired by the magnificence of northern
Michigan.
The Bellaire area is her studio and home base as it is surrounded by endless
sources for her paintings. Primarily known for her work in transparent
watercolor, her subjects can vary from the bizarre, such as dreams and
emotional issues, or to structures and machinery, to the numerous lakes and
wildlife, or to the human figure. Her style of painting also ranges widely
from realism to abstract.
Through both teaching and demonstrations, Mary enthusiastically
shares her work first-hand with others. Holding classes & workshops in
watercolor, drawing and life drawing indoors throughout the year, and
on-site during the summer, Mary teaches students confidence first, then
composition, drawing skills and painting techniques. Critiques are daily at
the end of each session. Although students tell her putting their painting
up for everyone to look at is the most daunting part the first time, they
wholeheartedly agree that listening to everyone talk about their successes
and struggles soon becomes the most reassuring part of the class. Teaching
since 1993, she welcomes adults and children, beginners and more experienced
painters. Some of her workshop locations are the Gibson House, Haverhill,
New Hampshire, Mackinac Island, Michigan and the nationally known artcenter,
Traverse City, Michigan. By appointment, Mary also critiques oils and other
mediums at her studio. Friday Night Live Festival in Traverse City sponsored
Mary for ten years to demonstrate her on-site techniques in painting
portraits and the surrounding festival through a variety of mediums such as
graphite, watercolor, and 3’x4’ canvases with acrylic. Other groups such as
the Michigan Municipal League and the Council of Michigan Foundations have
also sponsored Mary’s demonstrations at their receptions.
Mary’s paintings
have been accepted for the Michigan Watercolor Society’s annual show. “First
Poppies” traveled with their 50th anniversary show around the state, hanging
in many museums including the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Dennos
Museum in
Traverse City. “Sugar Peaches”, a rendition of her husband’s canning
efforts, hung in the MWS exhibit in Saginaw.
Recently returning to sculpture, she plans to renew her
acquaintance with this medium by exploring the human figure in various sizes
and working towards producing life size pieces. Constantly developing her
artistic limits and boundaries, Mary will continue to expand her creativity
in innovative & diverse ways.
